First Impressions [of Not Tokyo, Japan]

First impressions is misleading. I've already had my first impressions of Japan. I guess my new title is more appropriate. I'm past the stage the other students are in. I'm done with the honeymoon phase, now I'm in the "jaded and everything that happens is life" phase.

My first impression of Morioka? When I started living here (I already visited, before I came to Japan I decided to make it my personal mission to beat the program to the punch on everything.) I thought it would be a nice quiet mountain town with not much going on.

I was completely wrong.

First night into Morioka they're lighting boats on fire. It's part of a festival called Obon Masturi. All week the spirits of the dead have come back to visit their families, so lighting the boats on fire is supposed to send them back from whence they came. Every community in Morioka makes their own boat, and most of them have flashy fireworks attached to them that go off when the boat is lit.

Until the next time we meet on Megabee Rock Opera.
